What We’ve Learnt From 2022’s Yacht Shows

With the Explorer Yacht Summit wrapping up last week, we take a look back at a spectacular year of yachting shows and hear from some of the team on the biggest takeaways.

MONACO YACHT SHOW

One of the most anticipated events in the yachting calendar, Monaco Yacht Show has just closed its 31st edition. Growing year on year and drawing in thousands of attendees, Pelorus co-founders Geordie Mackay-Lewis and Jimmy Carroll, along with Director of Yachting Gayle Patterson, were in attendance to showcase Pelorus’ growing yacht division.

We spoke with key players in the industry, met clients and partners and focused on building out the experiential yacht space. But most excitingly, Geordie had the privilege of speaking on the expert charter panel at Monaco Yacht Summit where he discussed all things charter related and shared what goes into creating an epic yacht charter experience with Pelorus.

“I was privileged to be invited to speak at the yacht summit. It was a big statement to be speaking about charter on a panel alongside leading charter companies as we only launched our charter business this year.”

This year’s show was bigger and better than ever and, building on Pelorus’ success at the 2022 event, we’re looking forward to what next year brings. The experiential yachting space is something we’re continuing to pioneer alongside our traditional yachting charters, so the 32nd edition will be an exciting opportunity to continue hosting clients and collaborating with exciting partners, discussing with yacht owners and captains about their plans for the future and broadening our knowledge of charter vessels in the market.

FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Running for twice as long as Monaco’s yachting extravaganza, October 2022 marked the beginning of the 63rd edition of Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS). Hosted in the beating heart of America’s yachting scene, this edition – as with Monaco – was an impressive upscale on previous years with world debuts, immersive experiences and sprawling an impressive 90 acres of both water and land-based exhibits (but with around 100,000 attendees, the venue could hardly have been smaller).

The US yacht market has grown from strength to strength in recent years, and FLIBS always delivers by showcasing the incredible superyacht industry. With an increasing demand for experiential yachting, Pelorus’ presence at FLIBS this year was crucial.

“The US market is the most sought-after yacht market at the moment, so we focused on broadening our US strategy. We were talking to clients in Palm Beach all the way down to Miami, visiting private events, hosting clients and partners, and developing plans for a range of yachts and clients for the months ahead. Next year we look forward to developing more client and partner events with our ever-growing US team.”

EXPLORER YACHT SUMMIT

Pelorus and extreme adventures go hand in hand, so it was only natural that we’d be excited to attend the Explorer Yacht Summit this year. As the only international summit dedicated solely to this sector of yachting, this year’s edition saw industry professionals, owners and Captains sharing their knowledge and discussing the challenges and developments of the explorer market. With 70% of explorers today being in the 24-40m range, the concept of what makes an explorer yacht was very much the topic of the day.

Pelorus’ Director of Yachting, Gayle Patterson, described her most prominent takeaways: “Highlights of the summit were insights into exceptional conversion projects such as Ragnar and the pioneering 140m OK, the development of new types of propulsion and the call for action of how we as an industry can be doing so much more to assist scientific research and ocean conservation.”

“The evolution towards more experiential and aesthetic explorer yachts offering the latest technology and toys is opening the market up to new younger generation of explorer yacht owners. There is hope that through their travels, raised awareness of climate change and participating in scientific research, more yachts and owners will take action to protect and discover more about their very own playground: the world’s oceans.”

Gayle Patterson
Director of Yachting

Next year we’re excited to revisit these iconic boat shows and continue to establish Pelorus as a leader in the yachting world, as well as attending Palm Beach International Boat Show for the first time. Our ever-growing team will be able to create a bigger impact at these shows, introducing more people to Pelorus and increasing our book of contacts.

As well as attending shows, we will also be organising a series of intimate client and partner events as part of Pelorus Yachting. The first was in Austin, Texas, hosted last month in collaboration with Oceanco, and we’re looking forward to building on this outstanding success with more events in 2023 and beyond.
