Pelorus Foundation Climate Investment Fund

Climate Investment Fund

At Pelorus, we want our travel experiences to leave a positive impact on the planet. However, there is an elephant in the room: with travel, comes significant CO₂ emissions. These emissions come with a responsibility which Pelorus is committed to consciously addressing. Find out about the Climate Investment Fund, created and run by Pelorus Foundation.

Inspired by a desire to take a hands-on approach to carbon emissions, the Fund creates sustainable partnerships directly with the projects on the ground – supporting communities on the front line of the climate crisis, and investing in the technology which is pioneering carbon removal.

By their nature, all carbon removal projects have strengths and weaknesses. Pelorus will use a combination of distinct projects to ensure the strongest possible approach to climate investment. The flexible nature of our portfolio will also allow us to adapt to the fast-paced and everchanging nature of the industry.

We will, therefore, reassess our portfolio at the end of every year to ensure that we continue to make the greatest possible impact.

This year, the projects have been carefully selected based upon the following criteria:

REMOVING CARBON DIOXIDE

Pelorus Foundation’s vision was to create a portfolio which showcased and supported some of the world’s most high-quality carbon dioxide removal solutions. Although they think it’s important to prevent more carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere, the Foundation decided that physically removing the emissions from our trips would have a more direct impact. The removal projects they are looking to invest in this year combine nature and technology-based solutions: blue carbon, soil carbon, and forest carbon.

OFFERING A HOLISTIC APPROACH

Pelorus Foundation supports the view that project success depends on the long-term involvement of local people, on their own terms, on their own lands. That’s why the Foundation has chosen to support several Plan Vivo Standard certified projects which place the local population at the heart of the restoration projects. From co-creation, to arranging local NGO teams to run projects, the Plan Vivo projects give autonomy to communities on the forefront of the climate crisis.

PIONEERING THE FUTURE

Finally, Pelorus Foundation wanted the Climate Investment Fund to invest in the development of novel technological solutions that are pioneering new methods needed to reverse climate change. Scaling up blue carbon is predicted to be crucial in the United Nation’s goal to keep global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees. They’re always on the look out for emerging technologies to include in their portfolio too.

“The immense restorative power of nature itself is one of the most cost-effective ways to tackle climate change, yet there is also an urgent need to invest in novel technology pioneering new methods needed to reverse climate change. Our new Climate Investment Portfolio enables both. Through the Fund we are able to powerfully promote some of the world’s leading carbon removal projects to individuals with the capacity to make significant change to the future of our planet. And whilst we recognise that our Climate Investment Fund will not end climate change, it is a measure we take to reduce our impact on the environment, and ensure travel is a force of good.”

Calculating Carbon

Greenly carbon removal

As part of this commitment, our travel and yachting designers use Greenly’s bespoke carbon accounting platform to measure the carbon footprint of every trip accurately and independently – educating not only ourselves but relaying relevant information to our supply chain. Using data input by Pelorus, Greenly’s calculations strictly follow the guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol to provide an objective evaluation of travel emissions.

By understanding the carbon footprint of our trips, we can offer clients practical advice on how to reduce emissions while still experiencing Pelorus’ unique brand of experiential adventure.

We are not climate industry experts, and we don’t pretend to be, but what we can promise is transparency, due diligence (including independent advice from external experts), and a clear explanation of the decisions we make. There is no fix-all solution to achieving a completely green trajectory, as much as we wish there was. We therefore ask that you have patience while we work on becoming a more sustainable version of ourselves.

After all, when it comes to fixing the climate crisis, we are all a work in progress – but what really matters is the word progress. In the coming months and years, we will be keeping you up to date with ours – from our application to become a B-Corp company, introduction of ambitious emission reduction targets, including our own direct emissions, and a thorough audit of our supply chain.
