Bisate Lodge

Ruhengeri, Rwanda

Overview

An eco-lodge nestled in a volcanic landscape, this is probably the best location on the planet for spotting gorillas. Looking like a birds nest, the lodge is structurally unique whilst exuding luxury.

Key Features

  • Bisate is located in a rare and exclusive spot in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, next to the Volcanoes National Park, offering breath-taking views of the Virunga volcanoes
  • The best place on the planet to spot gorillas: spend the day trekking whilst contributing to reforestation and the local community, or set off on a pilgrimage to the grave of Dian Fossey who was famed for her research on the mountain gorilla

For a truly unique experience, look no further than Bisate. Akin to a giant birds nest tucked into the trees, this lodge from Wilderness Safaris is Rwanda’s most breath-taking and luxurious retreat. Set among 42 hectares of land with views over Mount Bisoke, the property is located within the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone (‘bisate’ means ‘pieces’ in Kinyarwanda).

With just six ensuite rooms, they all boast incredible views of the surrounding landscape whilst adhering to environmental principles and reflecting Rwandan culture. Inside these domed thatch villas you can expect emerald greens echoing the forest, stone fireplaces, patterned textiles and private decks.

Floor-to-ceiling windows allow guests to enjoy the remarkable views of the Rwandan jungle whilst enjoying a hearty dinner fusing traditional flavours with international influence. The farm-to-table creations showcase ingredients like wild honey, papaya, chillies and climbing beans. But for many a highlight is the coffee: enjoy a coffee tasting with their barista as you listen to the stories behind their production.

Sustainability

Each guest is invited to participate in biodiversity conservation efforts, as well as engage and meet the local community. Guests can visit the on-site tree nursery where the Bisate reforestation project is well underway providing indigenous saplings to Volcanoes National Park. The lodge runs a War on Waste initiative, working with local communities and businesses in Rwanda to tackle waste, find sustainable alternatives to harmful packaging and foster a circular economy. On top of this, they work with Children In The Wilderness to provide scholarships to students at Rwandan schools.

Why we love it

Intrepid travellers can choose from a whole host of activities here, from golden monkey trekking, visiting the ruins of Karisoke (primatologist Dian Fossey’s former research centre dedicated to saving gorillas from extinction) and hiking to the top of Mount Bisoke for panoramic views of the rainforest.
