Hotel Castello di Reschio italy

The Castello dates back to 1050 but has recently undergone a lengthy restoration process to transform it into a unique hotel. Nestled amidst Umbria’s rolling green hills, Castello di Reschio was rescued from total decay by its owners, acclaimed architect Count Benedikt Bolza and his wife, artist Donna Nencia Corsini.

Using a team of skilled local artisans, the family set about restoring this storied building, leaving original features (arches, beams, vaulted ceilings, stone fireplaces) intact but adding their own eclectic mix of bespoke furniture and finds from antique markets.

There are 36 rooms and suites here, each very different from the next and split between the castle itself and the ex-vestry of an adjacent church. The designs pay homage to either a past resident of the castle, a family member, or the room’s past use, as well as being filled with Count Benedikt’s own bespoke furniture and antiques. The most impressive is the castle’s tower: a whole five-floor suite with incredible panoramas and an open-air tub.

There’s a distinct farm-to-table policy here, with as much produce as possible coming either from the estate itself (they have a kitchen garden, olive groves, beehives and vineyards as well as wild boar and deer) or within the immediate area. Guests can opt for the elegant Al Castello restaurant located in the castle ramparts, or the more rustic Alle Scuderie occupying the ex-stables.

Down in the castle’s ancient wine cellars, the otherworldly Bathhouse is a dreamy retreat. Worn stone steps lead down to this sanctuary inspired by the Roman baths of old, where you can find a large saltwater pool, two treatment rooms, a sauna and a hammam. Partnering with a medical specialist to create a unique combination of personalised treatments, everything here is utterly bespoke, focusing on your specific needs so you emerge feeling relaxed and re-energised.
