Hotel Union Øye

Norangsfjorden, Norway

Overview

Step back in time and surround yourself in Norway’s outstanding natural beauty from a property renowned for its cultural heritage and breathtaking views. First opened in 1891, Hotel Union Øye is nestled amongst fjords, mountains, and forests and is utterly distinctive in character.

Key Features

  • 30 individually-furnished rooms
  • An historic hotel located by the Norangsfjord
  • Excellent dining with a focus on the best local and seasonal produce
  • Activities including hiking, boat trips, kayaking, biking, helicopter rides, and alpine skiing

First opened in 1891, this traditional manor house is lavishly furnished and encircled by mountains and waterfalls nearly as majestic as the hotel itself.

Only about 11 miles from the Geiranger Fjord, the Union Øye acts as a sumptuous base from which to access the UNESCO-listed natural and cultural treasures of arguably Norway’s most beautiful fjord. Return from visiting the fjord to the elegant dining room to swap stories of the day’s adventures while savouring the locally-sourced gourmet cuisine.

Design

A timeless interior awaits when you enter beneath its characteristic red gables to rooms full of antique furniture, rich wood, and elegant detailing.

Choose from five varieties of rooms each individually designed and named after noteworthy artists, royals, and mountaineers who have stayed in Union Øye. Grandeur comes as standard, with the rooms decorated with antiques and offering deluxe bathrooms with wonderful views encompassing the fjords, gardens, and peaks.

Sustainability

Hotel Union Øye is based in a remote fjord village that is home to only 40 residents and the opening of the hotel saved the small village, which was becoming increasingly deserted, by generating over 150 jobs. In addition, the hotel makes contributions to the local community, supporting organisations and events in the surrounding area.

In response to the Norwegian government’s pledge that by 2026 all transport on fjords should be zero-emission, the hotel group and local companies devised a plan to create a hydrogen hub that will produce green hydrogen to run boats and any trucks, buses, and larger vessels. As well as this, all produce is sourced from certified sustainable suppliers and locally, avoiding large transportation and deliveries.

Why we love it

The hotel’s location provides a gateway to unbelievable Norwegian scenery including an absolute must-see, the 20km long Geiranger Fjord. With abandoned farms peppering the towering mountain ledges, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers intriguing cultural history and mesmerising sights to remember.
