Lengishu kenya

Nestled into a ridge with stunning views across the Laikipia Plateau and the Northern Frontier, Lengishu is located in one of Kenya’s leading wildlife destinations. In the foothills of Mount Kenya, the Borana Conservancy offers a variety of habitats and wildlife: arid landscape to the north and ancient indigenous forests to the south, with a thriving population of over 200 black and white rhino.

Blending seamlessly into its surroundings and built entirely out of sustainable materials, the house has been crafted by local artisans using Kenyan timber, stone excavated from the site itself, as well as earth from the hillside to clad the walls. Inside, the interiors are tasteful with a neutral colour palette interspersed with splashes of red in a nod to the owner’s Scottish heritage and that of their neighbours; the local Samburu community.

Four cottages are arranged along the hillside, accommodating up to 12 guests, making it the ideal private home for families or large gatherings. The bedrooms are spacious, with fireplaces or wood-burning stoves for those colder evenings, as well as ensuite bathrooms boasting freestanding bathtubs and floor-to-ceiling windows – perfect for bathtub game viewing. All rooms face east over the valley below, offering spectacular sunrise views which can be enjoyed from the balconies (each bedroom has its own private veranda).

In the main house is where you’ll find the communal gathering spaces, and these include a vast open-plan drawing and dining room and a smaller TV room/study. There is also a multi-functional studio which can transform depending on the groups’ needs: a massage and yoga studio, nursery or den.

Step out to the pool where you can keep an eye out for elephants at the watering hole below, with a gym, games room and terrace dining area close by. A rocky viewpoint located just a short walk away presents the ideal spot for a sundowner. There is also a terrace at the main house – the favourite for an alfresco breakfast.
