Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia
If you are looking for a super stylish yet intimate lodge, look no further than Lolebezi. A portmanteau of the owner’s son ‘Lole’ and the River Zambezi, it’s a wild, remote, and luxurious experience alongside one of the most incredible stretches of river.
Prime location along a private river frontage on the banks of the Zambezi, within five hectares of protected wilderness deep in the Lower Zambezi National Park
Enjoy a romantic sundowner in your private plunge pool and watch the myriad of wildlife that come to drink from the waters of the river
Drawing inspiration from its surroundings, Lolebezi occupies a prime location along the Zambezi River in perhaps the best spot in Zambia – the Lower Zambezi National Park. A raw and untamed landscape, it’s famed for its buffalo and elephant sightings as well as lion, leopard and hyena (and there are no enclosures or fences, so the animals roam freely).
Marrying all the sophistication of a luxury lodge with a sense of being down-to-earth, Lolebezi is comprised of glass and wood with natural colours elevated inside (think greens paired with gold). Inside, local furnishings complement the surrounding landscape whilst outside, loungers overlook the riverside (it feels as if you’re practically floating on the Zambezi). Also outside, the infinity pool blends seamlessly into the river and a fire pit provides the ideal spot for a post-dinner drink.
With just six suites in total, you’ll feel truly nestled in the heart of the bush. Each eco-friendly lodge features a sitting room, an indoor and outdoor shower and dining room. Relax on your private deck beside the plunge pool as you watch elephants drinking from the Zambezi.
Thanks to the variety of landscape (think grassland, miombo scrub and thickets of ebony, fig, winterthorn and mahogany) and water flowing freely year-round, there’s always animals about grazing. Head out on foot to spot the elephants splashing about in these waters, leopards dozing on high branches, and packs of wild dog. Or, cover more ground on a game drive to catch sight of the local lion prides.
Sustainability has been embedded into the creation of Lolebezi and all of the food served is Halaal-friendly.
During the build, leaving a small footprint was a big priority: trees were incorporated into the design, the dining area was built from reclaimed railway sleepers and all lights are solar-powered.
The water supply and wastewater are managed to ensure that no pollution enters the river.
For every night a guest spends, $10 is donated to the African Bush Camps Foundation, enriching communities in the surrounding areas with a focus on education, conservation, and community empowerment.
Why we love it
The action doesn’t stop on land. With such a fantastic setting, it would be foolish to not get out there on the water. For most safari-goers, there isn’t the opportunity to participate in water-based activities but, at Lolebezi, it’s central to the experience. From canoeing and fishing to a peaceful river cruise sundowner in hand, there are some amazing activities that make the most of the lodge’s unique setting.
