Sindabezi Island Camp

Livingstone, Zambia

Overview

Nestled in the waters of the Zambezi River, just upstream from Victoria Falls, Sindabezi Island Camp is a luxurious bush camp with breathtaking views over the river and an abundance of activities on offer.

Key Features

  • Sindabezi Island is one of the top 10 eco-lodges in Africa
  • There are just five chalets located on the property’s private island on the Zambezi River
  • Activities include canoeing, island lunches, visits to Mukuni Park, sunrise and sunset boating, visits to the local villages, guided bush walks, fishing trips on the Zambezi and guided tours of Livingstone and Victoria Falls

Located on a private island on the Zambezi River, Sindabezi Island Camp is unique as it’s the only luxury bush camp from where Victoria Falls can easily be explored. Touted as the discerning traveller’s best-kept secret and one of the top 10 eco-lodges in Africa, this idyllic camp offers views across the flood plains of the Zambezi and into the nearby National Park.

During the day you can enjoy some of the best wildlife in the area (think outstanding birdlife and resident hippos), and at night return to this tranquil haven.

Design

Blending into the Zambezi wilderness, there are just five tented chalets here, allowing guests to soak up the sights and sounds. Crafted from local timber, reed and thatch, each chalet is set on stilts and is open-fronted with a deck or terrace area overlooking the river.

For those staying in the chalet on the south side of the island, views sprawl across the Zambezi River to the Victoria Falls National Park where you can catch a glimpse of game – elephant, impala and wildebeest – quenching their thirst on the riverbanks. There are also two chalets on the north side and a further Honeymoon chalet on a secluded sandy shore at the end of the island.

The main camp area is set on the sand and is the ideal place to relax and unwind. There’s a boma with sofas, a bar and a dining area overlooking the vegetated sandbanks and the river. There is also a raised lounge area between two tree trunks offering spectacular views over the river. And for chilly evenings, there’s a roaring campfire.

Sustainability

Sindabezi uses solar power as their main energy source to biodegradable toiletries and cleaning products, wood supplies from sustainable forests in the Copper belt near Ndola, and Vivreau still and sparkling bottling system that helps save 20,000 plastic water bottles a year and around 2,000 tin cans or organic vegetables fresh from the gardens on-site. Sindabezi and its sister company Tongabezi also sponsor the Tujatane School & Village Project which provides education to the children from the local community.

Why we love it

The lodge has a myriad of different activities on offer and is the best place to explore Victoria Falls. From canoeing, floating river meals and sunrise or sunset boating to visits to Mukuni Park and local villages as well as bush walks (and plenty more activities besides) there’s so much to keep you busy and fully immersed in your surroundings.
