Thanda Island Tanzania

Located between the mainland of Tanzania and Mafia Island, Thanda Island is an exclusive private getaway in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by coral reefs, it would take less than 15 minutes to walk around the white sandy beaches and is the world’s only exclusive-use island in a marine reserve (something that plays very much on the agenda, with a host of experiences seeing guests exploring these waters).

Accommodation on Thanda Island comes in the form of the main villa and two Tanzanian Bandas. The villa is home to five luxurious suites, with a calming décor thanks to the white-washed wood, pale colour palette, and indoor/outdoor flow. Whoever is lucky enough to secure the grand suite is in for a treat as this sprawling abode occupies an entire wing with doors opening in three directions for a wraparound view of the island.

Staying in the bandas is a different feeling, with the furniture crafted out of wood from trees on the island. This rustic feel is no less luxurious, but makes you feel more at home and in touch with your surrounds.

Despite being on an island and having just one villa, there’s an incredible array of facilities at Thanda. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the gym, tennis and volleyball courts, while there’s also a world-class spa and yoga, reiki, and meditation classes offered by the on-site wellness specialist who is at your whim. Make the most of the crystal-clear waters by heading out on paddleboards, jet skis, kayaks or sailboats, and don’t miss the chance to go swimming with the region’s famous whale sharks as they glide gracefully underwater.

As you’re staying in your own private villa, there aren’t any restaurants or standard modes of ordering from a leatherbound menu. Instead, a consultation takes place in advance of your visit resulting in personalised daily menus that are catered to the tastes of you and your clan. Chef Ulrich Philander serves excellent seafood dishes caught locally, while you can also expect traditional Swahili curries and even pizza nights – nothing is off the menu.
