Taking its name from the magnificent 170-year-old Sequoia trees on the site, Sequoia Lodge is set atop Mount Lofty, the highest point in the Adelaide Hills. In this bucolic landscape, seemingly removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world, you’ll find the largest surviving koala population in the world, as well as four world-class wine regions within a 50-kilometre radius.

There are just 14 suites here, all open-plan with sunken lounges and featuring oil paintings by local artist Stephen Trebilcock throughout. The interiors are neutral, with warm wood, stone, and blonde timber that allow the incredible vistas to take centre stage. And speaking of views, you can enjoy them either from your freestanding bathtub, the daybed or from your large wooden balcony.

Activities

The Gatekeeper’s Day Spa, once a National Trust building, has been meticulously restored to house three treatment rooms and a private, post-treatment landscaped garden. Indulge in an rejuvenating facial or relaxing massage and enjoy the organic, locally sourced products that are used in every treatment. There are also two private, naturally spring-fed hot pools that can be booked exclusively, as well as a main infinity pool perched overlooking the valley rim.

Cuisine

For informal dining, head to the lounge, but just steps from the lodge is Hardy’s Verandah restaurant where you will be treated to a seasonally changing fine-dining menu that spotlights local farmers and fishermen. Pair your four- or seven-course ‘Valley to Verandah’ meal with a carefully curated selection of highly regarded wines from South Australia, before enjoying a nightcap at the bar where mixologists create a new menu of drinks every season, inspired by the crops of the moment.

Sustainability

Local products, including sandstone walls, ceramics, artworks, and bath products, are thoughtfully integrated throughout the hotel, chosen with care to minimize the lodge's carbon footprint and endorse local artisans. The lodge is committed to actively diminishing its food waste and minimizing its use of energy, water, and plastics whenever feasible.

Why we love it

If you can tear yourself away from the valley vistas, there are plenty of incredible experiences to enjoy. Hike through untouched national parks, hidden creeks and white sandy beaches as you keep a keen eye out for koalas, kangaroos, and wallabies. To enjoy the best the region has to offer, join one of the sommeliers for a private wine tasting or spend an evening stargazing as you discover thousands of stars that can only be viewed in this part of the world.
