Caribbean Events to Experience by Yacht

From music festivals and pirate adventures to humpback whale migrations and high-octane water sports, discover why exploring the Caribbean by yacht with Pelorus is the perfect way to welcome in the new year.

If like many, your 2020 holiday plans didn’t get off the ground, why not begin 2021 island hopping under the Caribbean sun, where events and adventure are plentiful. Make 2021 a year to remember (for all the right reasons) and plan your Caribbean break around one of these four unique events taking place from January to April 2021. We also recommend Pelorus-designed activities you can experience around each event as well as the yachts available to take you there.

Bequia Music Festival: 27 – 31 January 2021

As the second largest island in the Grenadines, Bequia is host to the Bequia Music Festival. Taking place from the 27th to 31st January. This four-day extravaganza appeals to both international and Caribbean displays of talent, in what can only be described as heaven on earth. Attracting the yachts and island dwellers, the exuberant atmosphere is contagious and no evening is the same. Appealing to a wide variety of people, the festival succeeds in uniting those from all walks of life through a shared enjoyment of steel drum brilliance, jazz and all sorts of live music.

Pelorus Experiences

An unspoilt island of beautiful shoreline, pastel painted houses and a slow pace of live, Bequia is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque isles in the Grenadine archipelago. Renowned for its shipwright heritage, head to shore to attempt crafting your own model boat with local resources that you can later race in the bay. Visit Turtle beach where you can assist local conservationists as you guide newly-hatched baby turtles to the water’s edge, or make the most of Bequia’s healthy reefs and diverse marine life as you explore the underwater world with an expert Pelorus dive guide. The Grenadine Archipelago has a lot to offer, from off-roading and canyoning in Martinique to extreme hiking in St. Vincent, these islands are longing to be explored.

Humpback Migration in the Dominican Republic: March 2021

Each spring, more than 5,000 Northern Atlantic humpback whales migrate towards the north coast of the Dominican Republic to the Silver Bank, to mate and nurse new-born calves. One of only two areas in the world where nature enthusiasts can experience an in-water encounter with these gentle giants, this experience presents a wonderful opportunity. Nestled within the Caribbean mountains, the northern provinces of Puerto Plata and Samaná are renowned for their unspoilt beaches, radiant azure waters and verdant mountains and offer a naturally beautiful spot to reside, before embarking on an excursion to spot these wild creatures.

A jewel in Latin America, the Dominican Republic is a culturally fascinating and beguiling country with opportunity for adrenaline fuelled adventures everywhere.

Paraglide from the highest mountain in the Caribbean, descend waterfalls surrounded by verdant jungle or learn to kitesurf and surf in one of the world’s favourite spots for the sport. Or, for a more relaxing experience and for the food enthusiasts amongst you, wander the coffee and chocolate plantations.

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta: 31 March – 06 April 2021

The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta is the embodiment of elegance featuring an impressive array of vintage beauties, polished to perfection. Experience the thrill of the regatta from the comfort of your superyacht as you swing at anchor in an idyllic bay. Running from the 31st March to 6th April, this is an opportunity to eye up beautifully classic hulls, with magnificent sails, majestic as they connect with the wind and water whilst racing for the title. A week that incorporates English cream tea, rowing gigs and an open mic night, which following some rum punch appeals to all, makes this a quintessentially British event, and all the better beneath the Caribbean sun.

Once the regatta wraps up, cruise south to Dominica for some adrenaline-fuelled adventure as you embark on an immersive Pirates of the Caribbean style experience. Following an intriguing message in a bottle delivered to your yacht by mystical mermaid, the adventure begins. Head ashore to the mouth of Indian River, aptly the location where The Pirates of the Caribbean movie ‘Dead Man’s Chest’ was filmed. Kayak up river through verdant jungle, encountering multiple obstacles and mysterious characters along the way. Your quest to rescue the stolen treasure will see you wander past waterfalls and gorges as well as battling pirates on an idyllic and deserted beach. To make it all the more real, there will be cannon fire and on the horizon looms the perilous sails of a pirate ship. Your adventure will culminate in a dive to the depths through a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of fish to reach the buried treasure, where ‘X’ marks the spot. Celebrate your triumph with a beach banquet under a star scattered sky, accompanied by fire breathers, dancers and acrobats.

Trinidad & Tobago Goat, Donkey & Crab Races: 05 – 06 April 2021

One of the most unique events in the Caribbean are the Buccoo Goat, Donkey & Crab Races. Taking place on the 5th and 6th April, this is a major event in Tobago’s tourism calendar and a tradition since 1925 that came about as Tobagonians decided they needed to introduce an equivalent to horse racing. Both donkey and crab races are showcased during this 2-day event, but it’s the goat races that take centre stage. Having evolved into a highly anticipated event, visitors can even become honorary Tobagonians for a day, allowing them to feel truly immersed in the festive atmosphere. The hype leading up to the event includes street parades and many residents open their homes to visitors, providing delicious local delicacies for this special occasion.

Pelorus Experiences

Having experienced a flourish of noise, colour and festivities, relax on board your charter yacht as you cruise north to Union Island for an adventure of a different kind – a genuine castaway survival experience. Stranded in two teams on a deserted beach, you’ll be accompanied by an ex-British Special Forces officer who will guide you as you delve deep into the jungle wilderness. Tasked with the challenges faced by a real castaway, your group will hunt, fish or forage for your food before attempting to build a fire from scratch. Having discovered minimal or luxurious items (depending on your preference) buried by Pelorus, you will begin building your shelter for a night under the stars. The following morning, your castaway skills will be put to the test when foraging for breakfast and building a raft. Time is of the essence as you compete with the other team to safely return to the comfort of your yacht. Seeking something a little more high-octane? Pelorus can source a celebrity survival guide or an ex-SAS officer to put you through your paces, all before relaxing and rejuvenating on board your luxury yacht to enjoy some well-deserved sundowners.
