Discover New Zealand by Yacht

Discover a country brimming with culture and excitement. This yacht expedition is packed full of adventurous experiences from heli-biking and off-roading to encounters with Maori warriors and ex-special forces soldiers. For those who like a little less high-octane, New Zealand also has an abundance of vineyards and spectacular hiking trails, all accessible from the comfort of your yacht. Read on to discover just a few of the experiences on offer in New Zealand on a Pelorus yacht expedition.

When to go:
November – April

HELI-BIKING
Biking is more popular than ever in New Zealand thanks to its immensely rugged topography. Mountain bike through the extreme backcountry terrain, or for the more advanced riders, ascend to 6000 feet in the highest heli-biking experience available in New Zealand, before embarking on a descent into the open alpine tundra.

GLIDING
Explore the spectacular and dramatic mountains of the Southern New Zealand Alps where the visibility is often in excess of 400 km, by gliding amongst the peaks with an experienced pilot. The volatile weather and wild mountains make for a thrilling and challenging experience like no other.

CANYONING
Helicopter from your yacht to Nelson, an area that challenges even the most advanced canyoning experts. Here you’ll embark on an intense hike through the steep and difficult terrain to reach the beginning of the canyon. With back to back down climbs, challenging abseils and huge slides, this experience is not for the light-hearted. For those seeking something a little more slow-paced, head to Torrent River where you’ll find a great canyon full of exciting jumps, slides and abseils.

CULTURAL IMMERSION
Immerse yourselves in the native New Zealand culture by spending the day with a local Maori tribe. They will teach you to track, hunt, gather and prepare local Maori cuisine. You can choose to elevate this immersion with a simulated Maori warrior ambush. This is the chance to experience something truly out of the ordinary, and incredibly exhilarating.

OFF-ROADING
With an abundance of remote tracks, river crossings, hairpin bends and sheer drops, New Zealand is well-equipped for a hair-raising off-roading Landrover Defender experience. With exclusive access to private land, this drive will be as extreme as they come.

VINEYARDS
Boasting world-class wines, a trip to New Zealand wouldn’t be complete without a visit to some of its renowned vineyards. Learn how to tend to the vines before enjoying a premium tasting with exquisite cuisine paired by a top local chef. Take-in the myriad of flavours as you admire the backdrop of vines, rolling hills and glorious sunshine.

FISHING & FOSSICKING
New Zealand is known for its world-record game fishing and is a popular activity amongst the locals. Guided by two fishing industry icons and national competition winners, you’ll dive to spear enormous tuna and marlin, or you can snorkel for lobster, crayfish and scallops before your yacht chef prepares your catch at a beach BBQ.

EXTREME
Venture into the unknown and embark on an intense exercise with an ex-special forces guide who will challenge you to the extreme. Expect confined spaces, high ropes and a radical challenge – even the All Blacks struggled with keeping up.

HIKING
Hiking is by far one of the most popular activities in New Zealand and on this yacht expedition, Pelorus will arrange for an expert local guide to collect you from your yacht by helicopter for a days trekking. With unrivalled knowledge, your guide will take you on uncharted animal trails that lead to stunning untouched native beech forest. As you hike you’ll explore old mining areas with fallen stone buildings and sluicing trails, and admire stunning waterfalls and river rapids as they make their way down from the far reaches of the mountain tops.

DIVING
Two islands with completely disparate diving, New Zealand’s waters offer a wealth of wrecks, fjords and kelp forests that will evoke an awe-inspired reaction. Together with exploring the unique sea bed topography, you may also have the opportunity to spot blue, humpback and sperm whales, as well as orca’s and dolphins.

RUM-RACING
Auckland is known as the city of sails, and with a beautifully interesting, rugged coastline surrounded my islands you can see why. Rum racing has been part of the New Zealand culture for eons; you’ll board sail boats and race around the islands – the first to arrive at the Royal Auckland Yacht Club wins.

DISCOVERY
Head off in a helicopter with a legendary pilot who knows the fjord land like the back of his hand. You’ll discover remote, wild and rich terrain, before flying over shipwrecks, seal colonies, pre-European Māori battlegrounds and more. Land for lunch in one of New Zealand’s most stunningly surreal settings to enjoy freshly caught seafood. Finish your day in the deepest and darkest fiords, an area that is a complete untouched wilderness.

RALLY DRIVING
Ignite your competitive spirit as you drive full specification rally cars on part of the New Zealand rally circuit. You’ll skid around the circuit kicking up dirt behind you for a fully exhilarating experience.

HELI-RAFTING
Experience an action packed wilderness excursion in the stunning Westland National Park where Pelorus can arrange an exclusive rafting and helicopter adventure with one of New Zealand’s white water rafting legends. You’ll be dropped from your heli on the glacier fed waters that boast thrilling white water rapids. From here you’ll raft down rapids known as “Hell Fire” and “The Squeeze” before taking a spectacular helicopter flight with views over native beech forests, snow-capped mountains and the internationally renowned Hooker Glacier.

SITE-SEEING
Low-octane but definitely not disappointing, embark on a cruise through the spectacular, awe-inspiring mountains, or take local jet boats to reach more difficult areas. You’ll navigate through the very shallow waters before embarking on a thrilling 80kmph ride over gravel banks and fast flowing rivers. After a secluded lunch surrounded by the vast southern alps, try your hand at racing these jet boats.
