Family Adventure On The Peruvian Amazon

The Peruvian Amazon covers more than 60% of the country and is one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet. Peru contains the largest number of bird species and the third-largest number of mammalian species in the world. Pelorus will take you and your family deep into the dense lowland jungle of Peru. Embark on an adventure filled with fascinating wildlife encounters and unique experiences that will leave you and your children with abiding memories. Get up close to the wild and abundant nature of the Amazon with the luxury of being able to return to the comfort of your vessel.

When to go:
June – October

IQUITOS

Arrive in Iquitos where you and your family will be met and escorted to your waiting vessel. Get settled in and get fully acquainted with your crew and expert naturalist guides who will take care of you on this jungle adventure. Enjoy a delicious supper on board before retiring to your suite for your first night.

Wake up early and explore the Yarapa River by skiff. This tributary to the Amazon River is abundant with natural life and is part of a reserve that protects the pure, uninhibited wilderness of this area. Help your children find primates and birds that call in the trees surrounding the river. Spot the beady eyes of caiman resting in the shallows. After a refreshing drink and delicious lunch on board, head back out on a skiff, this time in search of the fearsome Amazon piranha. You and your family will have the chance to catch some of these iconic fish as you cast a line into the river. This is an exciting way to teach your children the art of fishing with expert guides on hand to help them perfect their technique.

In the evening, as dusk falls, head out on a wildlife excursion on the black waters of the Nauta Caño. See the heavens with startling unrivalled clarity and witness the stars reflected in the black water.

NAUTA CAÑO

As the sun rises head out on an immersive jungle walk with an expert local guide. Your walk will take you to the firm soil forest. Your eagle-eyed naturalist guides will point out the wildlife you and your children may miss such as night monkeys, the three-toed sloth, and the pygmy marmoset. Keep your eyes peeled for bird species like the capped heron.

After lunch on board return to the water. Choose how you would like to explore the biodiverse waters. You and your children can head out on a kayak or canoe or simply swim through the water keeping an eye out for shy, pink river dolphins that occasionally dart above the water. Spotting these dolphins is a truly exceptional experience and if you are successful you will come away with a true sense of awe and achievement.

Back in Iquitos visit a local market. Your guides will be with you and will show you where to find the first of the days catch provided by the fishermen of the Amazonia. Sample the regions freshest, exotic fruits and enjoy the warm and lively atmosphere of this tropical market. After this head to the extraordinary birthplace of the Amazon. It is an awe-inspiring experience to see where such a large and powerful river begins its long journey.

YANALPA RIVER

Explore the black waters of the Yanalpa River keeping an eye out for creatures that dart in and out of the safety of the jungle. You and your children will disembark and walk deep into the heart of the Amazonian rainforest. Spot tree frogs and monkeys, herons and macaws and learn to distinguish to their distinct calls in the cacophony of jungle sounds. Back on the skiff make your way along the Dorado River. This experience will take place at dusk allowing your whole family to witness the jungle transformation. Rather than going to sleep as darkness falls, the jungle comes alive with a nocturnal orchestra of wildlife who arise to hunt under the light of the moon and stars.

TAPICHE RIVER

Arise early on the Pacaya River and make your way into the jungle with your children for a wild picnic breakfast accompanied only by the sounds of the early-morning jungle. Energy replenished, head out on a fishing expedition down the river. Local experts will guide you on the best, secret places to cast your line so you can expect success.

Choose to travel in a kayak or on a paddleboard as you embark on an adventure down the river accompanied by locals who paddle down the river in their native banana boats. Follow their techniques as they easily manoeuvre through the water and keep your eyes peeled for pink river dolphins that intermittently come to the surface of the water.

CLAVERO LAKE

Arise and set off into the jungle on foot with your family. Spot the incredible variety of bird and wildlife that inhabit this dense forest. Allow expert guides to teach you and your family how to track these animals using footprints and calls to uncover their way of life. This is the perfect way to teach your children about the amazing intricacies of the animal kingdom in a fun and memorable way. Canoe, kayak, or swim in the Yarapa river listening to the calls of birds and monkeys and keeping an eye out for marine wildlife that shares the water with you.

After lunch on board, hop into a skiff to visit a remote Amazonian village. Here you will be accompanied by a local translator who will act as an intermediary between you and the tribespeople. Learn about their local customs, traditions, and way of life and you and your family will gain a deeper understanding of the hardships and skills it takes to live a life dependent on the whims of the jungle. This authentic experience is one you and your children are unlikely to forget and it will give you a deeper appreciation of the people that forge a life in the jungle.

IQUITOS

On your final day return to Iquitos where you will get the chance to visit the Manatee Rescue Centre. Learn about the vital work they are doing in this centre to protect these gentle giants. Get the chance to teach your children more about these elusive animals before your family begin your journey homeward.
