Another World at Kachi Lodge
This luxury dome camp on the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia offers a next-level experience, where comfort meets true wilderness.
Words by Pelorus
Every now and then an opportunity arises that you need to stop and take notice of. Kachi Lodge, a luxury dome camp on the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia, is one such opportunity. Sitting at an altitude of 3600m, at the foot of Tunupa Volcano, these elegant structures offer comfort more akin to a 5-star hotel (each has a private bathroom, comfortable bedding, interior decoration, and heating), providing a next-level Private Adventure within an arid and otherworldly environment, far from the nearest town, crowd or mobile phone signal. This is deso-luxury.
Aside from the sheer awe of being in such remote and stunning surroundings, you also have a variety of activities at your disposal. You can hike to the lower lip of the volcano crater, visit an island covered with giant cacti, witness the charming village of Coquesa and its mummies sheltered in a cave, and learn how the locals collect salt from the surface of the Salar. And, as the inky darkness of night takes over, you’ll use a telescope to observe the stars of the Altiplano – they have to be seen to be truly appreciated.
In the kitchen, chefs work exclusively with Bolivian products; cuisine at Kachi is taken very seriously, with innovation that mirrors the culture and biodiversity of Bolivia.
And to make matters better still, you don’t have to part with a large, six-figure sum to visit Kachi Lodge, as can be the case when such endless luxury reaches the deep depths of desolation – costs start from £9800 for two people for four nights (excluding international flights).
