TAHITI AND THE SOCIETY ISLANDS

More than just paradisal white sand beaches and swaying palm trees, Tahiti and The Society Islands are home to a colourful and varied array of marine life, coral conservation projects, pearl farms, ancient temples, vanilla orchid plantations, and incredibly friendly locals who can teach you about their fascinating history and culture.

When to go:
MAY – SEPTEMBER

Land in French Polynesia’s capital city, Pape’ete, where your yacht will be waiting. Once settled on board, head ashore with an expert local guide who will escort you on a trek as you delve further into this spectacular volcanic island. Learn about the history of the islands as you hike and why the locals have always believed that they are in paradise.

Spend a morning hand-feeding stingrays and reef sharks in Moorea before jumping into the water to swim and snorkel with them. Later, traverse the island in 4×4’s to explore the mountainous terrain and visit the Coral Gardeners who will teach you about the reefs and their role in protecting the islands. You will have the chance to adopt and replant some coral in a new location where it will flourish and grow.

The Garden of Eden

Wake up in Huahine, also known as ‘The Garden of Eden’. Explore this culturally preserved island, its temples, and sanctuaries with a professional guide. Kayak and paddleboard down the coast to happen upon a Motu set up for a beach picnic in total isolation. Local musicians will entertain you as you dine and after lunch, spend the afternoon learning and trying your hand at traditional Polynesian games. Later, visit the Faei Village to feed the sacred blue-eyed eels and snorkel the stunning coral gardens. As you tender back to your yacht, keep an eye out for the local whale population, there may even be an opportunity to snorkel with these majestic mammals.

After an al fresco breakfast on board, take a stunning morning flight over the island of Raiatea on a private sea plane. Here, you will have the option to spend the afternoon touring the many pearl farms in the lagoon.

Sumptuous Scents and Deserted Atolls

As you cruise to Taha’a, the island of the vanilla orchid, the sumptuous scent will hit you as you enter the surrounding reef. Here you can hike with local guides across deep valleys, discovering the flora and fauna along the way. Alternatively, drift snorkel with intensely coloured tropical fish and dive along the outside of the reef.

The iconic island of Bora Bora offers the opportunity to learn the basic skills involved in piloting and racing the outrigger war canoe. You can also opt to set up a remote island camp on a deserted atoll where local survival specialists will teach you their techniques for fishing and foraging. As evening approaches, gather around the open fire and stargaze with a local astronomer. Head into the water in your canoe to learn the basics of celestial navigation and choose to camp on the atoll or navigate back to your yacht.
