Location

Located on a private concession in the Doro !Nawas Conservancy in the heart of Damaraland, Onduli Ridge is an incredibly striking camp built at the base of two south-facing granite outcrops. The landscape is a semi-desert and sparse savannah, with rugged hills, plains and wooded river valleys begging to be explored.

There are six spacious suites, peppered between giant boulders on the hillside. Round in design to maximise the sweeping views of the desert, they blend into their surroundings thanks to stone walls and roofs that mimic the shapes of the hillsides. To the front of each suite, a spacious deck complete with sun loungers and chairs is the ideal spot from which to admire the scenery. The highlight, however, is the cleverly designed king-size bed that can be easily rolled out onto the deck for an incredible night spent under the stars.

Cuisine

Upskilling local Namibians, the chefs at Onduli deliver inventive and fresh food (an impressive feat, considering their location). From tapas lunches to Namibian steaks or crafted pizza evenings, no two meals are ever the same. Sip sundowners on the deck beside the swimming pool and watch the sunset, or in the raised living room adorned with photographs by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (Onduli means giraffe in the Oshiwambo language spoken in northern Namibia).

Aside from the individual accommodations, central to Onduli Ridge is the main building which houses the kitchen, large open bar, dining area and lounge. In winter, the bifold glass doors can be shut to keep out the rain and the cold without obstructing the view, whilst a fireplace warms the space. Throughout the camp, earthy tones and animal prints bring everything together and help the camp blend further into its surroundings.

Why we love it

This is one of the least populated parts of the world, so space isn’t in short supply. Explore the dramatic terrain and geological formations as you go out searching for desert-adapted elephants or black rhino, as well as cheetah, leopard, and lion. Other activities include guided nature walks, trips to see the rock art at Twyfelfontein, solar e-bike rides and visits to the Damara Living Museum to gain insight into the Damara people’s traditional way of life.
