Namibia is home to one of the world’s most striking series of landscapes, where towering sand dunes stretch out to meet the thousands of kilometres of rugged coastline along the Atlantic shoreline, with not a human being as far as the eye can see. With little over two million people across a nation that is about one and a half times the size of France, Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world. It is this unique geography and opportunity for complete privacy that makes this such an interesting destination waiting to be explored, coupled with the two things that are in utter abundance in this part of the world: wildlife and stars.

Sleep under the stars

Begin your experience in the heart of Damaraland, a region composed of rolling hills, rocky outcrops and distant mountain ranges. Home to some of the most fascinating rock paintings and engravings ever to be discovered, this is the perfect starting point to learn about the history of this land, with the etchings of this ‘open-air gallery’ dating back between 2,000 – 10,000 years ago.

Tribal stories tell tales of hunting, gathering and life in the desert, with the stars forming a key part of the beliefs of the indigenous people, where they were considered to represent their ancestors who now watch down from above. Another story tells of a lonely young girl who awaits the return of her hunter companions as night falls. To light their way in the dark she throws up a handful of white wood-ash. This becomes the Milky Way, and so, even when there is no moon, its shining light guides the hunters home. Spend your nights in the cleverly designed beds at Onduli Ridge, which can be rolled out onto your wrap-around deck so you are able to fall asleep gazing up at the night sky.

Go Remote

Travel northwards to the country’s border, where Namibia is separated from Angola by the Kunene River, and Serra Cafema awaits. Here, you will have the opportunity to experience an area so remote, it seems otherworldly. Indulge your senses in the surrounding silence and take in the contrast of the oasis of the camp compared to the rocky, lunar-landscape that surrounds it. A highlight of this area is the chance to meet with and learn from the Himba community, a nomadic tribe that have spent hundreds of years learning to live in one of the driest areas in the world.

The lodge itself is located in a conservancy that is primarily owned by the Himba people, and works to ensure a harmonious and beneficial relationship through guiding guests sensitively through the interaction. Spend your three-night stay here going out for bush walks, day and night game drives, boating or exploring on a quad bike and admiring the hordes of wildlife that come down to the river drink.

Space Out

Your final stop sees you arriving at the world-renowned Sossusvlei, perhaps one of the most visibly spectacular areas in the Namib Desert and your playground for the next four days. Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is perfectly located for the grand finale of your adventure, with no better option than the exquisite Star Dune Suite, constructed from local stone and glass and creating a sense of floating above the surrounding desertscape.

Right on the edge of the Dark Sky Reserve, one of the places where the night sky is the clearest visible in the world and there is no light pollution, stop and take in the 360-degree panorama of the horizon. Visit the specially built astronomy centre with the resident astronomer and be transported to galaxies beyond as you stargaze through the lens of an enormous telescope. Take to the skies with a scenic helicopter flight over the dunes (a must) or go one step further and depart at sunrise for a hot air balloon experience unlike any other, as you drift upward in tranquil elegance to the sky above.
